Under 16's

Next fixture (16/10/05) away at
Old Leamingtonians

The 2003/4 season saw us welcome a new group of players and officials to Fenley Field with the arrival of an established junior side who had previously played at Rugby Lions.  With them they brought an excellent reputation as one of the strongest sides of their age group.  We look forward to watching their development and are convinced that a number of these young players will progress through the sides to our 1st XV.

The Squad

Harley Steel, Matt Davies, Daniel Treharne, Matt Bennett, Jamie Doherty, Daniel Murch, Jason Battershill, Matt Staley, George Elwell, James Keefe, Jon Carruthers, Ben O'Reardon, Jack Seager, Josh Hartley Hewitt, Alex Martin,

Old Laurentians 12 v Dudley 33

Having a side double booked the OL's used the pool fixture system and played against the unknown side of Dudley. From the start the OLs took control and when the forwards drove Dudley back into defence the ball was passed quickly back for John Caruthers to crash over the line after only 5 mins. OLs continued to put pressure on Dudley but could not find the passing skills they demonstrated in the first few mins. Dudley started to capitalize on the now frequent OL’s handling errors to score 3 times under the posts. This made the score at half time 5-19 to the visitors.

The second half saw the OL's gain most of the position and it was not until 20min in that Matt Davies in a good set piece move crashed over the line, with the try safely converted by John Caruthers. OL's seemed to be making inroads into Dudley’s score, however, it was short lived as the stronger Dudley backs began to open up the OL's defence running in two quick further tries. Once again the lads can take a lot from this game as the running from the backs improved and the forward play continued to remain consistent. Final Score: OL’s 12 Dudley 33.

Next Game: Rugby Lions Sunday 18th December at Webb Ellis Road.

Old Covs 12 - Old Laurentians 34

OLs travelled to Coventry this weekend to play Old Covs trying to make amend for last weeks loss. Old Covs started the stronger pushing hard on the defences of the OLs, however some fine forward play soon helped the backs set up a good platform for them to run out of trouble and let George Elwell run in for a well worked try. Old Covs hit back from the kick off and when their try was converted they went ahead. The OL's heads never went down and they started to play some great rugby. With the whole team upping their game the backs were able to cut loose and Josh Hartley Hewitt rounded off a good move to score under the posts for the first of his 2 tries. The second half saw the OL's team grow in confidence and strength and with Harley Steel making some great strong and determined runs saw him rewarded with a move that took him over the line to score in great style.
John Currthers went on to score a try as well as making 2 conversions. George Elwell scored a further try to add to his tally. All in all a great and much improved team performance from the lads, bring on the Lions!

Harbury 22 - OL's 17

OL's played away to Harbury this week for their first game in three weeks and unfortunately it showed! After only 5 mins Harbury went ahead with a well worked forward drive into the corner helped on by some sloppy tackeling.OLs
were further rocked when Harbury scored again within a matter of minutes.
At half time OLs found themselves 22-0 down to a pumped up home side. In the second half the young OLs were now awake and started to play the kind of rugby we all know they are capable of playing, and when Danny March
made a great run, opening the defence to score, OL's really came to life. The team began to dominate play especially in the line outs and further tries from Josh Hartly Hewitt & Danny Murch brought OL's within one score of taking the match but the lads simply ran out of time. If they had only played the first half like the second, the game would have been out of Harburys reach, still a lesson learnt, namely attending training and starting the
game, awake!!

OL's 10 - Barkers' Butts 3

Old Laurentians U16 faced Barkers Butts U16 this Sunday with both teams’ records showing one lost game,  this was always going to be a hard fought battle. The weather was also going to play a part as in strong wind and driving rain it wasn’t going to be easy for either team. Barkers started the game with the wind behind them pushing hard and deep into the OL’s half, coming up short of a try with good defending from OL’s Barkers put the first points on the board from a penalty. OL’s came back strong with some great driving runs from forwards Dom Hammond, Ben Fellows, Harley Steel and Jamie Doherty, bringing them into the Barkers 22. Barkers tried to clear but kicked the ball straight to George Elwell at the half-way line, a slight knock-on was missed by the referee, but with still a lot to do George ran the ball round the Barkers defence to score a great individual try. In the second half with the assistance of the wind OL’s started to dominate territory, which finally paid off, with a try by OL’s winger, Josh Hartley Hewitt. Both teams played a hard game with some great play from both sides but the final score was 10 -3 and a good win for OL’s.

OLs next game is at home against Tamworth on Sunday the 13th November at 11.00 am. The U16's are holding a Chilli and Quiz night on Friday the 18th November at OL's clubhouse in Lime Tree Avenue.  Any interested teams should contact Alison Seager on Rugby 890063 for tickets/details.

St Andrews U16's - 7 OL's U16's - 24

OLs made the short journey to local rivals St Andrews this week to play a game in almost 'monsoon' weather conditions, however a good (wet) crowd enjoyed a well fought local derby.

Both sides starting well with the Saints putting OLs under early pressure but then against the run of play James Keefe broke through to run in from half way and score a good individual try.

Saints hit back with a well worked try within a matter of minutes.  Further good work continued and after dominant play from the forwards OLs capitilised and a good 'training ground' move enabled George Elwell to score under the posts.  Half Time Score 12-7.

The second half saw the weather improve, however, both sides were showing 'signs' of the heavy ground.  After 10 minutes Danny Treharne with a typically strong run went over to increase the OLs score.  Harley Steel added a further try late in the match and with the ever reliable boot of Jon Carruthers the final score was 24-7 to the OL's.  Once again a good all round team effort.  OL's U16's next home game in Sunday 6th November against Barker Butts. The OL's U16's will be helping to run the sweet and refreshment stall at OL's annual Bonfire Night on Saturday 5th November at Fenley Fields.

OL's 34 - Stourbridge 0

This change to the fixture list turned out to be an enjoyable game for both players and supporters alike at Fenley Field.

The young OL's team, captained by Ben Oreardon dominated in set pieces from very early on in the game from early in the game . Some great forwards work in scrummaging and lineouts gave the backs plenty of good quick balls to work with, but equally some good strong defence from Stourbridge kept the OL's out until after a couple of powerful drives by the forwards Dom Hammond picked up from the base of a ruck and dived over for his first try. Again the hard work on the training ground was paying off with some great line out balls, which enabled the backs to cut some excellent lines of running but they were still kept at bay.
Stourbridge started to come back into the game with some good passages of play instigated by their quick fly half but again excellent defence from the whole OL's team kept them out. It was from 2 Stourbridge line outs that quick thinking Dom Hammond took his chances to increase his try tally to 3 by pouncing on tapped lineout ball and sprinting over the line.
In the second half the game became quite scrappy at times but it was the turn of the backs to put their names on the score sheet
George Elwell took a high ball just inside his own half and with his usual pace and agility beat several players to go under the posts. After a further great passage of support play between forwards and backs and some great handling along the back line , Josh Hartley-Hewitt went over in the corner for an excellent try. Stourbridge never gave up and came close on several occasion to scoring but were foiled only by the strong OL's defence.
The try scoring tally was finished off with  an excellent individual run beating several players to score a well deserved try under the posts by Alex Martin. With 2 conversions by John Curruthers the game ended OL's 34 - Stourbridge 0.  The OL's next game is a local derby with St Andrews at Ashlawn Road 11.00 p.m. Sunday 30th October.

Chaddersley Corbett 17 OL's 38

OL's U16s were looking forward to playing Chaddersley on home ground for the first time as their last encounter away ended in a narrow defeat, this time around however the tables were turned.

OLs started well putting Chaddersley under pressure right from the start and after only 5 mins Ben O'Rearden crashed over for the first of the OL's tries.  OLs were paying most of their rugby in their oppositions half and when the forwards won great ball in the middle of the pitch James Keefe broke through  to score under the posts,
Chaddersley hit back straight  from the kick-off to make the score 14-5. This seemed only to spur on the young Os and they did not let up the pressure and when Dom Hammond went over just on half time, the first half ended 21-5.
The second half went very much the same as the first with Josh Hartley-Hewitt scoring after only 5mins. OLs  were putting into practice all the hard work done on the training ground with the line out moves and this proved to be very profitable with most of their scoring opportunities coming from such moves. Further tries were added from George Elwell and Matt Staley and with the reliable boot of John Curruthers the final score was 38-17.

OL's U16's 46  Broadstreet 0

This week OL's welcomed Broadstreet to Fenley Fields.  OL's, looking to shake off the defeat from last week, starting strongly immediately after the ball was knocked on to give Broadstreet possession.  OL's used the superior weight of their pack to win the scrum against the head and Danny Murch was able to run in from his own 22 to score a fine opening try.  OL's then continued to pile on the pressure and after a penalty was awarded to them, in a set piece move Matt Davies crashed over for his first try of the season.  Danny Murch converted with a well taken kick.  For the next 30 mins OLs dominated play with Broadstreet unable to venture out of their own half.  Dom Hammond drove strongly and determined from 5 yards out to score and again Danny Murch converted.  Josh Hartley-Hewitt rounded off an entertaining first half with a good run through the middle making the half time score 24-0. The second half started as the first finished, after only 5 mins Josh Hartley-Hewitt ran around the defence to open the second half scoring.  OL's continue to dominate the second half as they did they first and outplayed Broadstreet in all areas.  Matt Bennett, Dom Hammond and Ben O'Rearden all scoring good tries.  Danny Murch converted again making the final score 46-0.  All in all, a good solid performance from the OL youngsters.  Next weeks game should stretch the OL's further as they take on Chaddersley Corbett at home  - 11.00 am start.

OL's 12 Old Wigs 48

The OL's youngsters kicked off their season with a game against one of the strongest teams they have faced to date, Old Wigs.  This experienced team came to Fenley Field with an unbeaten record from last season and were the odds on favourites to win this encounter.  However it was OL's that started the stronger pinning Old Wigs back in their own 22 with some fiery forward play, and when Old Wigs broke away against the run of play to score their opening try, OL's responded within minutes with a well executed Danny Murch try which was converted by Jon Carruthers and at half time the score was a creditable 7-5 to OL's.  The second half started badly for OL's with Old Wigs changing key members of their team and going on to score 3 good tries within a 10 minute period, assisted by some sloppy OL's tackling.  OL's still rallied somewhat and when Dom Hammond broke through to score late on OL's held their own.  OL's were finally beaten resoundly 48-12.  This however was not the full story of the match and the OL's lads can take a great deal of good play away from this game and they showed several main areas of strength to build on for the rest of their season.
